Ego Sum, Ego Existo

“I am. I exist.”  These were the words of Rene Descartes written in his “Meditations”. Those words have challenged and haunted me since I first read them in a freshman philosophy class. “I exist.” What if that’s true? And if it’s true for me, what if it’s true for you? And if it’s true for you, what if it’s true for everyone else in the world? What if I really begin to view EVERYONE as a child of God? That changes a lot.

At the same time I was taking philosophy, I was in a psychology class. We began to talk about Nazi’s and how it was possible for Nazi’s during the third reich to commit such horrendous acts on people. How could they do such things? The short answer is, they didn’t view Jews (or handicapped, or homosexuals, or anyone who didn’t look like them) as full human beings. They viewed them as a “less than” species.

This blog isn’t created to try and convince you to land on a certain side of any issue. It’s purpose isn’t to argue any points of view. It isn’t intended to judge or critique. This blog is an experiment. It’s an experiment to see what would happen in the world if human beings really, truly viewed each other as their brothers and sisters. It’s an experiment to see what would happen in your own life if you honestly viewed everyone you came into contact with as a child of God.

What is the solution to world hunger? I don’t know. But I believe people will begin to act when they view a child starving in some far off country as their own child. Why are we fascinated with celebrity gossip as we read in tabloids some young actress falls scandalously from public grace? I don’t know. But I believe people will begin to watch with a broken heart instead of enjoyment as we realize that this is someone’s beautiful little daughter.

The subject of each post is simply what is on my heart and mind that week. While the specific message of each may seem different, my prayer is that there will be a thread that ties all of the thoughts and pictures together. I pray that common theme is one that opens our eyes to the world around us, that we may see as God sees and love as He loves.
